Located in La Jolla, California, The Evans School is a private coeducational day school for students in Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. We at The Evans School are dedicated to helping children develop a love of learning, a deep respect for family and friends, and the strength of character needed to make a positive difference in the world.
The teaching of core values, and the emphasis placed on that teaching, is the legacy we pass on to our students, each and every day. Our students’ talents and gifts are diverse and varied, but they come to understand that in every classroom, in every way, their teachers believe in them and their abilities to succeed.
As one visits the school, it soon becomes apparent that our small class size, our adherence to tradition, our attention to detail, the value placed on nurturing each child, and our commitment to character development make Evans a place unlike any other.
Evans History
Firmly Rooted in Tradition
The Evans School was founded in 1958 by Mrs. Rita Miller Baer, fondly known as Mrs. B. It was her dream to educate children, not only in math and reading, science and history, but more important, in integrity and kindness, sincerity and respect. The journey began in a small house, remodeled as a school, in La Jolla, California. In 1977, the school moved to its present loacation in the Muirlands area of La Jolla. It was Mrs. B’s vision to provide an environment where children would be encouraged, challenged, and strengthened in their quest to be their best. She understood, however, what many educators have come to realize, that teachers need to be actively engaged in the fostering of values. Over sixty years later, we at Evans still believe that to truly educate children, we must first teach them to recognize and to emulate that which is “good and true and beautiful”…. the essence of our daily Evans Pledge.
I promise myself today to feel, to think, to speak and to act, only in accord with those things which are good and true and beautiful.
Our 60th Anniversary celebration was a true “coming together” of Students, Alums and Parents, to rememember and honor our Founder who had a dream of what educating children could and should be. The phrase that rings true at Evans is that we still are, just as Mrs. Baer was, committed to guiding our children to develop “Character to Last a Lifetime.” Who can envision the changes that the next sixty years may bring! We recognize that change is ineveitable and that positive change is good… But we will always keep, in constant view, our motto, “Let Your Light So Shine.”
